- Postmarked September 10, 1862 from Richmond to Cobham, Virginia with postage stamp paying the standard 10c rate in effect after June 30, 1862.
- The addressee is William Cabell Rives, who was at that time a member of the Confederate Congress. Previously, Rives had served in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as having served as Ambassador to France.
