- Description
- The Postal Service issued a 39-cent Judy Garland commemorative stamp in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of twenty stamps on June 10, 2006, in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, New York. Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland, designed the stamp.
- With this twelfth stamp in the Legends of Hollywood series, the US Postal Service honors Judy Garland (1922-1969), considered by many to be one of the greatest entertainers of the twentieth century.
- Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp using a portrait of Garland by Tim O'Brien, an artist living in Brooklyn, New York. This portrait is based on a publicity photo for "A Star Is Born," the 1954 film for which Garland received an Academy Award nomination for best actress. A reproduction of Garland's signature appears at the bottom of the stamp. The photograph on the selvage shows her in another signature role, as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz."
- The Banknote Corporation of America, Inc./SSP printed the 75 million stamps in the offset process with the microprint "USPS."
