Object Details
- Description
- On November 8, 1960, Vatican City released its 10-value set to publicize the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy.
- The stamps, designed by Grassellini, depict details from a frieze in the Ospedale del Ceppo in Pistoia, Italy. The frieze, created in terracotta by Giovanni della Robbia, represents the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy.
- The 35-lire stamp depicts visiting prisoners. The left center of the frieze appears on the stamp. The central standing and the seated figure both wear a halo, showing Christ in disguise as a prisoner. The unseen right side shows two Dominicans bearing food to the prisoners, together with another figure.
- The stamps were printed at the Italian State Printing Office, Rome, by the photogravure method from plates containing forty subjects per pane (5 x 8) arranged in horizontal format.
