Object Details
- Description
- On April 6, 1961, the Vatican issued three stamps to commemorate the fifteenth centenary of the death of St. Leo I. All three values depict Algardi's "Pope Leo I Meeting Attila" and were designed by Andreina Grassellini.
- Leo the Great is remembered for his meetings with Attila the Hun and preventing an attack on Rome and destruction throughout Europe. His pontificate was also marked by problems within the Church. It was he who convoked the Council of Chalcedon (451 a.d.) to condemn heresy and confirm Church doctrine.
- The stamps were printed by photogravure on paper bearing the Crossed Keys watermarks (sideways). Perforation is 14, and printing is in panes of forty stamps each. The stamps remained valid until April 30, 1962.
