Object Details
- Description
- On June 13, 1961, a set of six commemorative stamps were released to mark the nineteenth centenary of St. Paul's arrival in Rome. The 10-lire and 30-lire values bear a map showing St. Paul's journey from Caesarea to Rome. The 15-lire and 75-lire stamps depict St. Paul's arrival in Rome based on a sculpture by Maraini. The 20-lire and 200-lire denominations bear an image of the First Basilica of St. Paul, Rome.
- The stamps were designed by the Grassellinis. Piero Grassellini was responsible for the designs depicting the map of St. Paul's voyage and the basilica. His wife, Andreina, executed the design for St. Paul's arrival in Rome.
- The stamps were printed at the State Printing Office, Rome, in panes of forty stamps (5 x 8) by the photogravure method. They remained valid for postage until June 30, 1962.
