Object Details
- Description
- On September 25, 1962, Vatican City issued four stamps in two designs to commemorate the Sixth International Christian Archeological Congress, which met September 23-28, 1962, at Ravenna.
- The 40- and 100-lire values feature images inspired by a bas-relief of a Christian sarcophagus found in the Cemetery of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina in Rome. The relief's vignette presents an image of the cross with two soldiers sleeping at its foot. The Chi Rho, a cruciform symbolizing Christ, appears surrounded by a triumphal crown.
- The 20- and 70-lire values feature a depiction of a marble slab from a young boy's grave, which bears the pictures of Saints Peter and Paul, each with his name inscribed beside it, and the Chi Rho above the name of Peter. Preserved in the Lateran Museum, both of these pieces date to Christianity's first century.
