Object Details
- Description
- On May 18, 1965, Vatican City issued four stamps to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321).
- The 10-lire stamp features a portrait of Dante from Raphael's fresco "Disputa," which is in the Stanze di Raffaello, Vatican Palace. A painting by Botticelli inspired the 40-, 70-, and 200-lire stamp illustrations. The 40-lire stamp depicts Dante and the three beasts at the entrance to the inferno; the 70-lire stamp depicts Dante and Virgil at the entrance to purgatory; the 200-lire stamp depicts Dante and Beatrice in Paradise.
- The Italian State Polygraphic Institute at Rome printed the stamps in the photogravure process with engraving. They measure 13 1/2 x 14mm.
- "7th Cent. Birth of Dante Alighieri." Vatican Notes 18, no. 4 (January-February 1970): 10.
