- Description
- Vatican City issued a series of stamps to commemorate the seventh centenary of the death of St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio (1221-1274) on September 26, 1974. There are three values in the series: 40-lire, 90-lire, and 220-lire.
- The designs are in woodcut set on a decorative background and inspired by ornamental subjects of the period. "S. Bonaventura 1274-1974" appears across the top; on the bottom appears the value of the stamps and the words "Poste Vaticane."
- The 90-lire stamp, in purple and gold, depicts the Tree of Life inspired by a work from the thirteenth century.
- Saint Bonaventure was a Doctor of the Church, a cardinal bishop of Albano, the Minister General of the Friars Minor, and a scholastic. He was born in Bagnoregio circa 1217. He received his primary education from the friars in Bagnoregio and then went to Paris, where he received his Master of Arts. He entered the Friars Minor circa 1243, and began to study theology. In 1253, he received his Doctorate in Scripture. Bonaventure was elected General of the Order in 1257. He frequently preached at the University of Paris. Gregory X (1210-1276) elevated him to cardinal bishop of Albano in 1273. He then helped the pope prepare for the Second Council of Lyons, which opened in 1274. Bonaventure presided over the meetings between the Greek and Latin delegates. He unexpectedly died during the council in 1274. He was canonized in 1482.
