- Description
- Vatican City issued a set of ten stamps on March 5, 1945 covering multiple postage rates, including express delivery. Except for the values of specific stamps, the set is identical in design to a set of stamps issued in 1940 (Scott No. 80-84) and 1933 (Scott No. E3-E4).
- The 1-lire (black and brown), 1.50-lire (black and red), and 2.50-lire (black and blue) values include a vignette of Pope Pius XII facing left.
- 'Poste Vaticane' appears on all designs. The stamps measure 2.3 x 3 cm, and the perforations are 14 x 14. No watermark is found on this set. The stamps were designed by Corrado Mezzana with engraving by Richelli and Nicastro. The Italian State Printing Works, Rome, printed the stamps by recess printing.
- A total of 1,000,000 stamps of the 5, 30, 50, 1.50, and 2.50 values were printed. The Vatican withdrew the stamps from sale on February 28, 1947. Some of these stamps exist in horizontal or vertical imperforate pairs.
