Object Details
- Description
- Burned office desk telephone; appears to be a red desktop telephone with ear piece, attached spiral cord, standard 12 push button keypad, and set of 6 buttons below keypad (red button on left) which were commonly for HOLD and for transferring calls / other call lines; gray phone or data cord attached with large metal piece fastened at other end (not sure what this is), cord tied in a knot; phone is melted in such a way that it appears Daliesque, like one of his surrealist melting clocks; soot marks all over; keypad and lower buttons have a crystallized appearance; four rubber feet on base of phone still extant; metal plate on base has markings “2565HK / 6-73” and a volume dial; phone was from the 1984 fire which occurred at USPS Headquarters building on L’Enfant Plaza; the phone was from the Office of Payroll Systems on the eighth floor, the fire was concentrated on the ninth floor just above this office; USPS hired a disaster recovery and restoration firm from Texas to clean up and return spaces in good condition and this phone was left behind (this according to email in file); fire occurred on October 15, 1984
