- Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) achieved national fame as general of the Union troops during the Civil War, and after the war served two terms as eighteenth president of the United States, from 1869 to 1877. During his presidency, the United States passed the Fifteenth Amendment, allowing all citizens to vote regardless of race. In 1880, Grant tried to win his party’s nomination to run for a third term as president but lost to James A. Garfield, who went on to win the election. The irregular edges mark this as a “splasher,” in which the molten metal was stamped with the die to gauge the sharpness of the image.
