- No. 54. Mary Magdalene. Ludovico Cardi, Called Cigoli. Born 1559. Died 1613. "A woman in the city which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping and began to wash His feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed His feet and anointed them with the ointment."--St. Luke, VII chap., 37 & 38 vs. It was this penitence, these tears, . . . which brought Mary Magdalene so near to the Saviour. This was the same earnest, active, loving spirit which made her one of those who "had ministered unto Christ," one of those who stood gazing when he died,--one of those "who beheld where He was laid," and "brought sweet spices to anoint Him." Most touching of all those distinctions with which this penitent was honored is that incident of the morning of the resurrection recorded by St. Mark. "And Jesus appeared first unto Mary Magdalene." The peculiar excellence of Cigoli is in portraying the fervor of contrition upon the countenance of a Magdalene; the fervor of a saint in prayer; or the worn and wasted face of a hermit. He was of the Florentine School, and finished his works with great care and skill. He imitated chiaro-scuro and design of Coreggio with success. [P. 43.]
