Summary
These records are the official files of Joseph Nelson Rose as Assistant Botanist at the United States Department of Agriculture, 1888-1896, and Assistant and Associate Curator of the Division of Plants, United States National Museum, 1896-1911 and 1917-1928. They also document Rose's professional career. For an administrative history of the United States National Herbarium and the Division of Plants, see record unit 220.
These records include incoming and outgoing correspondence with leading United States and foreign botanists, colleagues, herbarium and nursery curators, florists, agrostologists, field agents, amateur plant collectors, Department of Agriculture officials, Smithsonian Institution administrators, agricultural experiment stations, editors, and friends. The records concern examination, identification, and reports on botanical specimens; identification of specimens for publications; transfer of specimens to the United States National Herbarium; exchange of specimens; requests to Rose for information on the flora of Texas and Mexico; requests for bulbs, seeds, and plants; the purchase of cacti collections; research and collecting expeditions; nomenclature; illustrations for journals; collaboration on collecting specimens and publishing; requests for jobs; requests for recommendations of colleagues to systematize cultivated plants; proposals for a building to house the National Herbarium in order to expand the collection; meetings of scientific societies; and requests for Who's Who autobiographical information.
The records also include manuscripts and correspondence regarding Rose's joint Cactaceae project with Nathaniel Lord Britton; manuscripts and correspondence concerning Rose's joint project with John Donnell Smith regarding Hauyeae; notes, bibliographic references, and abstracts of correspondence relating to Rose's research on cacti; reviews; and occasional newspaper clippings concerning botanists.
