Summary
The following sums are appropriated: $32,500 for expenses of the general administrative office; $38,500 for the system of international exchanges; $50,000 for American ethnology, for continuing ethnological researches among the American Indians and the natives of Hawaii, the excavation and preservation of archaeologic remains, including necessary employees; $26,500 for maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory.
For the National Museum these sums are provided: $128,500 for furniture and appliances; for heating, lighting, electrical, telegraphic, and telephonic service, repairs of buildings, shops, and sheds; $509,000 for continuing preservation, exhibition, and increase of collections from the surveying and exploring expeditions of the Government, supplying uniforms to guards, postage stamps and foreign postal cards, preparation of manuscripts and illustrations for publications, and for purchase of books, pamphlets, and periodicals.
For the administration of the National Gallery of Art, including compensation of necessary employees, purchase of books of reference and periodicals, traveling expenses, and uniforms for guards, $29,500 is appropriated. For all printing and binding for the Smithsonian Institution $5,500 is provided. Total, Smithsonian Institution, $820,000, of which amount not to exceed $750,000 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia.
