- Summary
- The following sums are appropriated for the Smithsonian Institution: $26,000 for expenses of the system of international exchanges; $40,000 for continuing ethnological researches among the American Indians, including salaries of employees, purchase of books and periodicals; $15,000 for maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory; $22,500 for cases, furniture, and fixtures required for the exhibition of the collections of the National Museum; $18,000 for expense of heating, lighting, electrical, telegraphic, and telephonic service; $180,000 for continuing the preservation and increase of the collections from the surveying and exploring expeditions of the Government; $10,000 for purchase of specimens to supply deficiencies in the collections; and $2,000 for purchase of books, pamphlets, and periodicals for reference.
- Also $15,000 for repairs to buildings, shops, and sheds; $4,400 for rent of workshops and storage quarters; and $500 for postage stamps and foreign postal cards. To enable the Regents to commence the erection of a building for the use of the National Museum, substantially in accordance with the Plan A, prepared and submitted to Congress by the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution under the provisions of the Act approved June 28, 1902, the sum of $250,000 is provided. The construction shall be in charge of Bernard R. Green, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Library of Congress. He shall receive as full compensation for his services the sum of $2,000 annually in addition to his present salary, to be paid out of said appropriations.
- The sum of $95,000 is appropriated for the National Zoological Park: for roads, walks, bridges, water supply, sewerage and drainage; for improving the grounds; erecting and repairing buildings and inclosures; care and transportation of animals; salaries of employees, purchase of books and periodicals, and printing and publishing of operations. One-half of this sum shall be paid from the revenues of the District of Columbia and the other half from the Treasury of the United States. The sum of $17,000 is provide for printing labels and blanks and for the bulletins and proceedings of the National Museum.
