Notes
Edition statement from preface, page [8]. "I now publish a second edition with new drawings of the old species, and figures and descriptions of no less than eighteen others--all, in fact, that are known up to the present time.".
"Carus and Engelmann cite this edition as having appeared in 3 parts. Pt. I is reviewed under date of 1852 in the Naumannia, 1853, pp. 237-240. ... The preface, which probably appeared with the last part, is dated May 1, 1854." --Catalogue of the Edward E. Ayer Ornithological Library, page 260.
Gordon C. Sauer, in John Gould the bird man (1982), pages 70-71, posits that this edition was issued in 4 parts, rather than 3, between 1852 and 1854.
The original edition was issued in 3 parts between 1833 and 1835, with a title page dated 1834. See Sauer, no. 3, pages 25-26; Ayer Ornithological Library, pages 259-260.
Some of the illustrations in the original edition were also done by William Matthew Hart & Joseph Wolf, according to Sauer.
At end, on 2 unnumbered leaves printed on both sides, is "Observations on the anatomy of the toucan," by R. Owen, accompanied by a full-page uncolored lithograph, signed G. Scharf del. et lithog., printed by C. Hullmandel; reprinted from original edition.

SCNHRB copy 39088000082347 is imperfect? An unnumbered preliminary leaf is apparently wanting (possibly a half-title leaf). The preliminary pages present in the Cullman copy include the title leaf ([2] pages; verso blank), the dedication to Prof. Temminck ([2] pages; verso blank); the preface ([2] pages; dated 1st May 1854), the introduction ([1], 10-26 pages), and the list of plates ([2] pages; verso blank).
SCNHRB copy has bookplates: 1. (armorial) Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons, Bart. of Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells, with motto: Deo adjuvante; 2. John H.H. Phipps. An unidentified bookseller's printed description is mounted on the front free endpaper (with catalogue number 2306).
SCNHRB copy has a contemporary binding of gilt-tooled dark green half-morocco leather with green cloth-covered boards; raised bands; marbled endpapers; and all edges gilt.

Summary
Contains title page dated 1854, dedication, preface and introduction (26 pages at beginning), list of plates (1 leaf) and 51 full-page hand-colored lithographs, signed: Gould & Richter, del. et lith., Hullmandel & Walton, imp.; each is accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress (a few printed on both sides). Four of the plates are copies or free copies of the lithographs in the original edition: Ramphastos culminatus, originally drawn and lithographed by Edward Lear; Ramphastos dicolorus, Aulacoramphus Derbianus (Pteroglossus Derbianus in first edition) and Aulacoramphus haematopygius (Pteroglossus haematopygius in first edition), originally drawn and lithographed by John Gould and Elizabeth Gould. Of the others, 28 are new renderings (a few loosely based on the first edition plates) of the remaining species represented in the first edition, except for one here omitted; 19 represent newly identified species (in one case, newly distinguished). Each is accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress, some printed on both sides.
