Object Details

Notes
Compiled by M. Houttuyn, based largely on the principles of Linné's Systema naturae (12th ed.). Houttuyn's name appears at the end of the "Berigt van den autheur", in d. 1, stuk 18, p. xxv.
Publisher varies: d. 1, stuk 9-18, d. 2, stuk 1-14, and d. 3, stuk 1-3, were published by De erven van F. Houttuyn; d. 3, stuk 4-5 were published by J. van der Burgh en zoon.
Deel 2 (Planten) was also issued separately in 1774-1783 as: Handleiding tot de plant-en kruidkunde.
Many of the plates are signed by J.C. Philips.
Vignette on t.p.'s; initials; side-notes; head- and tail-pieces.
Numerous minor errors in paging throughout.
BM (Nat. hist.) v. 2, p. 880
Also available online.
Bookplate: Smithsonian Institution Libraries. Gift of Frederick M. Bayer.
Stamp of former owner on front free endpaper of d. 1, stuk 17: Frederick M. Bayer; an invoice for Bayer's purchase of books (including this set) from Jan Peet, Amsterdam, dated Sept. 4, 1956, is laid in d. 1, stuk 5. Also laid in d. 1, stuk 17 is a leaf ([2] p.) of ms. notes in ink (in Bayer's hand?) on Gorgonia.
The following volumes have the bookplate of "H. de Vries, boekverkoopers, Haarlem": d. 1, stuk 4, 8-9, 11, 16, 18; d. 2, stuk 1, 5, 9, 12-13; d. 3, stuk 1, 3, and 5.
Imperfect copy: plate XVII from d. 2, stuk 3, is wanting.
Plates XLVII and XLVIII in d. 3, stuk 5 are bound out of order following the section "Na-bericht van den schryver der Natuurlyke historie."
Old quarter leather binding with marbled paper boards; gilt-tooled spine and red leather spine label; with raised bands and sprinkled edges.
