Costume of Russia manuscript approximately 1820

Object Details

Notes
Binder's title.
Manuscript volume of ink and watercolor sketches with handwritten text and captions in English
Some of the plates are similar to images used in Grasset de Saint-Sauveur's work, Costumes civils actuels de tous les peuples connus
Plate 47 is signed: F.G. MDCCCXX
The plates numbered 1 through 60 are each accompanied by a leaf of handwritten textual description in ink
Most plates also have blank tissue guard-sheets
SCNHRB copy 39088010926350 has some provenance information: 1. "July 27th, 1801" is handwritten in pencil on the text leaf for plate 1, although the manuscript apparently dates from approximately 1820; 2. "Mary Ellen Reid, Charlemont Villa near Charlemont Bridge, Dublin" is handwritten in ink on the guard-sheet facing plate 29; 3. "From Frederic Proctor[?] to his wife Mary Ellen Disney long long ago" is inscribed in pencil on the text leaf for plate 38; 4. "Arthur Disney Reid, midshipman on board East Queen 1350 tons burthen" is handwritten in ink on the back paste-down endpaper. In addition, there are some scribbles and doodles, especially on the endpapers, possibly done by a child
SCNHRB copy has an old half-leather binding with marbled paper boards; raised bands; and gilt-lettered spine
SCNHRB copy has bookplate: Smithsonian Institution Libraries, Purchased from the Cullman Endowment
Summary
