Jeff Koons ironically reimagines banal subjects, such as inflatable toys or kitschy photos, and presents them on a monumental scale. In 1987 Koons was invited to participate for the first time in Skulptur Projekte Münster (Germany), a major art event held every 10 years, where he created his first installation in a public space. Based on a re-creation of a destroyed late-nineteenth-century original, Koons’s stainless steel sculpture 'Kiepenkerl' depicts a traveling peddler.
