Benjamin Franklin, Diplomat

These two letters were mailed during Benjamin Franklin’s second period of residence in London. Franklin was there on a diplomatic mission which began in 1764 and lasted 11 years. In London, Franklin was responsible for representing the interests of the New Jersey, Georgia and Massachusetts legislatures to Parliament. It was Franklin’s hope that a compromise could be reached between the British government and America, but this moderate position drew criticism from both sides.
