On January 28, 1921, Frank Palmer had to make a forced landing in his de Havilland #193 shortly before noon when he noticed a broken water connection and a small fire in his engine. He landed at an Army Air Service field in Middletown, Pennsylvania. The mail was forwarded as mechanics worked on the airplane. In his report, Palmer noted, the motor "caught fire in air as I approached Middletown. Turned on pressure Pyrene [fire extinguisher] and extinguished flame. Managed to get into Army field without damage to ship. Had no motor trouble until attempting to land Middletown when flames and smoke burst from both sides of engine."
