G. C. Phillips made over seven forced landings during the fall of 1920 while he was an airmail pilot, including two on September 27, 1920. Phillips' flights were forced down by weather, as well as engine difficulties of various types, including low oil pressure, leaking radiators, leaking gas and vibrating radiator brace rods. It is not known if Phillips was asked to leave the service, or decided to leave on his own, but a week after his last forced landing he departed the service.
