Riding Out the Storm
Weather and Disasters
When I became an employee, I remember that for 6 or 7 months we had this tremendous storm. It was a terrible winter storm and so I called the Postal Service and I reported off (I was a PTF) and they said ‘you know you have to be at work,’ and I said I can’t because I couldn’t get out of my driveway. They said, ‘You know what happens when you don’t come to work.’ Anyways, one thing led to another and the police department came out and made a police report. It became one of the biggest cases for the union in our local, a snow day, and I had to go and testify. People told me I shouldn’t testify because I was a PTF and all I was going to do was to tell my story because, like I told the man on the phone, my supervisor, I couldn’t come to work and he wanted me to document it. That was the big thing. It was in the newspaper and said that an employee was told to report to work on a snowy day but she said she couldn’t so she had to document it. Anyway, we won the case and everybody got paid.
