In the summer of 2007 the Smithsonian National Postal Museum began contacting surviving Railway Post Office clerks in preparation of creating a historical record of the service and its workers within the museum. Approximately 200 clerks responded to the preliminary inquiry. Since that summer, museum staff and a rotating group of dedicated interns have sought to obtain as much information as possible from the clerks. As a part of this process, museum interns Jen Giambrone and Caitlin Herzog spent several months speaking with retired RPO clerks from across the country and collecting artifacts.
