Sanford Solarz has combined his degree in aeronautical engineering and his interest in stamps to specialize in aviation history philately. He is most interested in early aviation, the era from the Wright Brothers through World War I, with special attention to the Blériot XI Monoplane. This airplane gained fame when Louis Blériot made the first airplane flight across the English Channel in 1909. Later examples of the Blériot XI carried the first airmail in Australia, Great Britain, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States.
