Tending Stations
Transportation-Related
Tending stations meant that they hang bags on a pole and they had a catcher on the side of the mail car that you would pull down that had a hook on them. Well here’s that bag of mail hanging there and you’re going 60 MPH and wham! It picks up this bag of mail. And at the same time you have either before or after this pole, you have to kick off the bag for that town. So anyway, I didn’t know what a catcher was hardly and we’re about 5 miles away and I’m looking and I don’t even know what I’m looking for and I see this thing hanging up there and think uh-oh, and I grabbed the arm and brought it down and wham! It hit it and I kicked off the deal and I brought in this bag and I emptied it on the table and, god bless him, the foreman said, ‘my boy, I think you’re going to make it.'
