Tricking the New Guy
First Day On the Job
My first few weeks at the post office I went to work at 3 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon and my supervisor says, ‘go back there and those guys will show you what to do.’ We had this big, long parcel post belt, (back then we got parcels in by the tractor trailer load). I went back there and they said, ‘are you the new guy?’ and I said yeah. And they said, ‘well, go on up at the end of the belt up there and open all those sacks up and dump them.’ They were heavy sacks! 70 pounds a piece! I went back the next day and dumped sacks for hours. This went on for about 2 or 3 weeks. I was young and dumb and didn’t know any better. This guy came by that didn’t work in that section, worked in a different section, he said, ‘why are you dumping all of them sacks?’ And I said those guys told me that was my job, dumping sacks. I went back there that evening and one of them said, ‘well, go dump them sacks.’ I said if you want those sacks dumped you dump them today. And then everybody laughed, they thought it was hilarious because they got the new guy to dump sacks for 14 or 15 nights in a row when we should have been taking a hour turns dumping.
