John Miller made a forced landing on March 28, 1919 when a heavy New York snowstorm obscured his view of the city. He was flying a Curtiss R-4 aircraft against turbulent wind and snow. Because his compass was unreliable, Miller managed to pinpoint his location by spotting the 792-foot high Woolworth Tower. Belmont Park was still hidden in the clouds, so Miller headed instead for a field on Great Neck, Long Island.
John Miller's extraordinary 1919 flight through a snowstorm from Philadelphia to New York is recounted in this clipping from the New York Times.
