Scale, Sample, Lunar Surface
Object Details
- Summary
- The Sample Scale was designed to weigh containers of rocks and soil during the lunar mission. It was important to know the weights so that pre-determined weight limits were not exceeded at lunar lift-off. This type of scale was used on Apollo 14, 15, 16, and 17. It was calibrated in 5 lb increments up to 80 lbs. 80 lbs on the Moon is equivalent to approximately 480 lbs on Earth.
- This particular unit was used for training and NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian in 1974.
