Graf Zeppelin World Flight cover
Object Details
- Description
- Cover carried by the airship Graf Zeppelin on its 1929 world flight. The cover is franked with four German stamps totaling RM14, the correct postage for the complete world flight from Friedrichshafen to Friedrichshafen. The stamps are tied with an onboard postmark dated August 16, 1929. The Friedrichshafen post office used this Graf Zeppelin onboard postmark in addition to the normal Friedrichshafen postmark to handle the flight's heavy volume of mail. The front also bears the special confirmation postmark "Luftschiff Graf Zeppelin Weltrundfahrt 1929" ("Airship Graf Zeppelin world flight 1929") in red as well as an official "Friedrichshafen (Bodensee) - Friedrichshafen (Bodensee)" route marking in red. A blue airmail etiquette has also been affixed.
- The reverse of the cover bears a Friedrichshafen arrival postmark dated September 4, 1929, the date on which the LZ127 returned from her world flight. The Graf Zeppelin had covered a total of 24,764 miles with a flying time of just twelve days, eleven hours and twenty-eight minutes!
