Graf Zeppelin World Flight cover
Object Details
- Description
- Cover posted in Canton, China, with a 4-cent Chinese stamp affixed, and carried by LZ127 Graf Zeppelin from Tokyo to Lakehurst on its 1929 world flight. Japanese stamps in the amount of Y3.10 are tied by a Tokyo postmark dated August 21, 1929. This was the correct letter-rate postage from Tokyo to Lakehurst. The special red cachet "First Round-The-World Flight by Graf Zeppelin / Tokio. O.P.O. 1929" has also been applied to the front. Dr. Hugo Eckener, commander of LZ127, signed the cover. The reverse of the cover bears a special receiver postmark from Lakehurst, New Jersey, dated August 29, 1929, 9:30 a.m., as well as a receiver postmark from Brooklyn, New York, dated August 29, 1929, 4:30 p.m.
