Folded letter from Paris office at Rue des Feuillantines
Object Details
- Description
- This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Rue des Feuillantines on December 11, 1870, (sixth collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Rivone, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection, it is likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Ville de Paris.
- The Ville de Paris carried 63 kilograms of mail, and the prevailing winds carried the balloon into Prussia, where it landed after a five-and-one-half hour flight. The aeronauts were arrested and held as prisoners of war. The Germans held most of the mail until after the Armistice.
