Kansas City, MO, Air Mail Field duplex handstamp
Object Details
- Description
- An Air Mail Field (AMF) facility supported airmail dispatches to flights from a metropolitan area's main post office, inbound city mail from arriving planes, as well as the connection of airmail between flights. Mail sortation was performed adjacent to the airport to facilitate timely handling of outbound and connecting mail.
- The AMF where this postmarking handstamp was used is now named the 'Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport' and is located in Kansas City, Missouri. Dedicated in 1927 by Charles Lindbergh, the runways are located across the Missouri River from the city's business center.
- This postmarker is an item 715 style, manufactured by Pitney Bowes under a supply contract to the Post Office Department. The head unscrews so that tour number, month, date, and year type can be inserted from the back of the die. The type projects through the slots and is held in place by flanges along the heel of the type. The steel socket attached to the handle prevents the type from backing out of the slots when the head is screwed on.
