15+15h and 45h 300th anniversary of the birth of Gregory Skovoroda cover
Object Details
- Description
- A semipostal souvenir sheet for the birth tercentenary of Ukrainian poet and philosopher Grigory Skovoroda was issued simultaneously in the village of Skovorodynivka (Kharkiv district), Ukraine and New York City on September 22, 2022. The New York ceremony was attended by First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, then in the United States for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. The first day cover was personally cancelled by the first lady on that occasion and gifted to the Smithsonian, along with a mint souvenir sheet and presentation box, in thanks for the Institution's assistance with documenting the destruction of cultural heritage sites, including the Skovoroda Museum, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
- According to Ukrposhta, the Ukrainian state postal operator, the 15 hyrvnia surcharge (approximately 40 U.S. cents) raised from the sale of each sheet will be used for reconstruction of the Skovoroda Museum.
